When Should You Use a 4 mm, 6 mm or 9 mm Polyurethane Floor?
Choose polyurethane cement screed thickness from the documented requirements of the selected system and the conditions in each area. A 4 mm, 6 mm or 9 mm label by itself does not establish the floor's suitability. Temperature limits, chemical resistance and reopening requirements must be checked for the named product at the proposed thickness.
MAP THE WORKING AREAS
Separate dry packing, wet processing, wash-down zones, cold areas and traffic routes. Record wheel loads, impacts, spills and cleaning practices in each zone. The same facility may need more than one build-up, texture or drainage detail.
RECORD TEMPERATURE CHANGES
Provide normal operating temperatures, cleaning-water temperatures and any hot or cold discharges. Include how often those conditions occur and how quickly the floor temperature changes. Do not assume that all polyurethane cement products have the same thermal performance, or that one thickness is suitable for every wash-down process.
COMPARE 4 MM, 6 MM AND 9 MM OPTIONS PROPERLY
Ask the supplier for the current system sheet for each proposed option. Compare the permitted thickness range, intended use, substrate requirements and published exposure limits. A nominal thickness should refer to the agreed installed build-up; clarify what is included when comparing quotations. Use the manufacturer's documented selection criteria rather than a universal thickness rule.
DETAIL THE WHOLE FLOOR
Include coving, drain interfaces, falls, doorways and terminations in the specification. Identify movement joints and how they will continue through the floor. Confirm the required surface texture and a workable cleaning method. These details should be planned before application begins.
ASSESS THE BASE AND THE PROGRAMME
Inspect concrete strength and condition, moisture, contamination and previous finishes. Specify preparation and repairs appropriate to the system. Plan access, application conditions, curing and protection around the facility's operations. Obtain separate guidance for foot traffic, vehicles, wash-down and chemical exposure where applicable.
USE VIDEO AS A VISUAL EXPLANATION
Our homepage Flooring systems guide includes Flowcrete's Flowfresh HF application demonstration. It helps visitors visualise a polyurethane cement installation. It is manufacturer material for that particular system, rather than footage of a Strong Flooring project or a specification for every PU screed.
Polyurethane cement is also different from a conventional cement screed used for levelling or as a base for another finish. Establish the required function before selecting a material.
