How Oil Contamination Affects Epoxy Flooring
Automotive workshops and engineering facilities often have concrete contaminated with oils, lubricants and hydraulic fluids. If these contaminants remain in the slab, epoxy may not bond properly. Degreasing, specialist cleaning and sometimes deeper mechanical removal may be needed before coating.
Inspect the history of the area as well as its surface appearance. Oil can penetrate porous concrete and remain beneath a floor that looks clean. Record the type of contamination, spill frequency and any previous cleaning or coating attempts.
A preparation proposal should explain how contamination will be removed and how the suitability of the remaining substrate will be assessed. Grinding alone is not evidence that oil has been eliminated. Localised testing or trial areas may help determine whether a reliable bond is achievable. Resolve ongoing leaks before installation, and agree on spill management and cleaning so the new finish is not immediately exposed to the same conditions.
