Can You Apply Resin Flooring Over Old Tiles?

In some situations, resin flooring can be installed over existing tiles, but only after proper assessment. Loose tiles, contamination, weak adhesive and grout lines can all cause problems. Mechanical preparation and adhesion testing are usually essential before a new system is applied.

The first question is whether the tiles and the layers beneath them provide a reliable base. Inspect for hollow or loose tiles, movement, cracks, contamination and moisture. Covering the surface does not stabilise an unsound tile bed or resolve movement below it.

Where an overlay is feasible, the specification should describe preparation, repairs, joint treatment and the compatible primer and resin build-up. A trial area or adhesion assessment may be appropriate. Existing movement joints still need suitable detailing, and changes in floor height must be checked at doors and drains. If the underlying floor is unreliable, removal may offer a more dependable starting point.
