Can You Apply Epoxy Flooring Over Existing Epoxy?

Existing epoxy can sometimes be overcoated if it is well bonded and properly prepared. The surface generally needs cleaning, abrasion and repairs before recoating. If the original coating is peeling or delaminating, simply applying another coat will not solve the problem.

Check the bond and condition of the existing coating before considering an overlay. Peeling, blistering, soft areas or widespread cracking may indicate a problem that another coat will conceal only temporarily. Establish what was installed previously where records are available.

A refurbishment specification should address contamination, surface preparation and compatibility between the existing and proposed materials. Remove failed areas rather than bridging them with fresh resin. Confirm how repairs, edges and movement joints will be treated, and consider a trial area if compatibility is uncertain. An overlay can be practical on a sound base, but its performance is limited by the layers left underneath.
